Molecular formulae
The molecular formula of an organic compound shows the composition of the molecule from the individual atoms - chemistry problem solver . It is a string of symbols of the elements involved in the composition of this compound. If the number of individual atoms is greater than one, it is indicated by subscripts (indices) on the corresponding symbol. The molecular formula is the simplest formula expressing the stoichiometric composition of molecules.
The molecular formula C3H6O3 states that this molecule is composed of three carbon atoms, six hydrogen atoms and three oxygen atoms. The sum formula says nothing about the way the individual atoms are linked. One can calculate the relative molecular mass and the percentages of the elements from the molecular formula - https://domyhomework.club/take-my-online-class/ . The terms gross formula or empirical formula are sometimes used as synonyms for the sum formula.
Structural formulae
The detailed structural formula, also known as the constitutional formula or valence line formula, is much more informative - chemistry problem solver . It shows the linkage of the individual atoms in the molecule. The atoms linked by common electron pairs are connected with so-called valence lines. Double bonds are represented by two valence dashes, triple bonds by three. The free electron pairs, i.e. those not involved in a bond, are drawn as "cross bars".
